The art by the Canadian Rodney Graham may come across as light-footed, yet in reality it harbors an extraordinary complexity in terms of content and its use of media. His photographs, objects, paintings, films, texts, and compositions contain references to philosophy and literature, to the history of art and culture, that range from Erasmus of Rotterdam and Edgar Allan Poe to Sigmund Freud, Richard Wagner, and Kurt Cobain. While in his early oeuvre he still approaches his sources of material with a great deal of conceptual rigor, in their playful ambivalence between scientific factuality and imaginative fiction his later works are marked primarily by an enormous and intelligent sense of humor. The Goetz Collection includes works from all of his creative phases and genres. This publication provides substantial insight into this all-rounder's extensive artistic work of the last forty years and extends an invitation to set out on a journey of discovery.Exhibition: Sammlung Goetz, Munich 28.11.2015-23.4.2016
After starting out as a painter, curator, and publisher in the sixties, Ulrike Ottinger (*1942 in Konstanz) found her artistic home in the medium of film. In her numerous projects she has developed an inimitable, unconventional imagery that seldom permits a clear separation between documentary and fiction. Her works thrive on the dialogue between the two poles. With the trilogy Bildnis einer Trinkerin—Aller jamais retour (Portrait of a Female Drunkard—Ticket of No Return, 1979), Freak Orlando (1981), and Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse (Dorian Gray in the Mirror of the Yellow Press, 1984), Ottinger created a monument to her hometown of Berlin while at the same time producing an absurd, theatrical, and historically charged universe. This publication presents her most important works, including the eight-channel installation Floating Food (2011), in which the artist provides an audiovisual summary of her journeys to distant lands and cultures, drawing attention to cultural phenomena and rituals. Exhibition schedule: Sammlung Goetz, Munich, May 29–October 6, 2012
The work originally conceived by the artist couple Hubbard / Birchler for the Swiss Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale re-constructs the life story of the American artist Flora Mayo. Mayo had a romantic relationship in the 1920s with the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. While he is now one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century, her work was de-stroyed, and her life forgotten. Hubbard / Birchler reanimate Mayo's compelling biography from a feminist perspective, combining reconstruction and documentation to create a multilayered form of narrative. The catalogue, produced for the current exhibition at the Sammlung Goetz, elucidates the research the artists engaged in and documents the installa-tion in an impressive manner
